Study Bunny (2020)

A high-fidelity app prototype for both elementary students and their teachers encouraging healthy study habits and organizational skills.

This was a semester-long project in which we were to create a high-fidelity working prototype for a cause of our choice. This semester was during the peak of Coronavirus quarantine season, so remote education was a big topic of discussion as we learned to navigate online educational resources.

Research: During my research phase, I met with Julie Martinez, an educator for Coyote Ridge Elementary’s Gifted & Talented program. Her perspective as a seasoned professional elementary teacher offered me insight into the needs of young children who genuinely want to succeed. The connection between teacher and student is vital, and with distance learning minimizing, or in some cases even removing that connection, something needed to be done to maximize the potential of technology beyond the 8-hour school day.

Concept: The concept of Study Bunny is an application that links student and teacher accounts for the creation and use of study materials. The goal is to instill healthy and effective study habits at an elementary level. The idea is that students will learn the effectiveness of drilling memorization as information is taught, rather than waiting until the last minute, or attempting to study from a textbook instead of using organized memorization materials.

Usability:  The students will be required to complete memorization sets assigned by their teacher through the app, and the set will not be marked as complete until the student gets a 100%. Sets can be cumulative to ensure that students do not forget concepts from past units. Teachers can create memorization sets themselves within the app, and monitor which concepts their students are struggling with, and which students are having more difficulty. This provides valuable insight for teachers to understand which concepts are not being grasped right away, and who might need more support on a more individual basis.

UI/UX: All elements of the design, from the color scheme, to the large, round buttons and friendly mascots, were decided on after researching and understanding the best way to appeal to young children. The goal was to transform studying from what might be seen as stressful, into a fun, friendly, and encouraging activity.
